Gilad Hochman גילעד הוכמן - Broken Glass

Biography

Defined as “one of Israel’s most prominent composers” by the Deutschland Magazine, "rising star in the classical music world” by France 24 and as “an already well known classical composer" by the BBC, Gilad Hochman is gaining growing interest in his musical work.
Amongst his achievements, at the age of 24 Mr. Hochman became the youngest composer ever to be awarded the prestigious Prime Minister Award for his artistic work. At age 22 he became the youngest to be appointed Composer in Residence by one of Israel’s known orchestras, Ra’anana Symphonette. He founded and artistically directed the Arco String Ensemble and the New Sounds concert series of the Israel Composers’ League. In 2007 Hochman also won a merit certificate from the city of Ra'anana.
Gilad Hochman was born in Israel in 1982 to an Odessa native father and a Paris native mother and is currently residing in Berlin, Germany. He started studying the piano at the age of 6 and composing at 9 years old. At age 18 he graduated with honors from the Herzliya Music Conservatory, where he studied under composer Dr. Ilya Heifets and pianist Dr. Mark Shaviner. In 2007 Mr. Hochman graduated with honors from the Buchman-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University, where he studied composition under composer Gil Shohat, musicology and advanced theoretical and practical musical subjects under some of Israel’s leading senior musicians.
Mr. Hochman's œuvre includes a wide range of compositions for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, choirs and orchestras which are regularly performed in Israel, the U.S. and throughout Europe. His work reflects a clear aesthetic approach and a rare combination between tradition and innovation, while creating a well structured contemporary musical language – personal, lyrical and expressive. In his work, Hochman uniquely merge European classical music traditions with those relating to the Jewish culture and to his Israeli origin.
Hochman’s music is often commissioned and performed by leading musicians and music institutes worldwide. It was performed, among others, by Oriol Ensemble Berlin, Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin, Synergy Ensemble, Musica Nova Ensemble, Ensemble Meitar, Studium Chorale, Tel Aviv Soloists Ensemble, Copenhagen Festival Ensemble and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. It was also performed at the Heidelberg Biennale for New Music, The World Saxophone Congress, Aachen International Chorbiennale, Israel Music Fest, the Israeli Schubertiade, Musica Sacra Festival - Maastricht, Magister Ludi Festival - Moscow and in dozens of different concert series worldwide.
Notable performances of Hochman's chamber work include two retrospective concerts in Germany: in 2009 at the Mainz Music Academy and in 2011, initiated by the Bochum Art Museum and performed by leading musicians of the Bochum Symphony Orchestra.
In 2013, Hochman had his debut concert at the Kammermusiksaal of the Berlin Philharmonie with his work “Concertino for string orchestra and flute obbligato” (January) and he was invited to lecture at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, as well as attend the performances of three of his own works played by different ensembles at the Magister Ludi Festival for Contemporary Music (February). In May Hochman’s compositions were released by German label ClassicClips on 2 commercial CDs, recorded by Ensemble Gagliano and BOVIARTrio and in June, Deutschlandradio Kultur had dedicated a full portrait to his musical work. At the same month his composition “Szymborska” was premiered at the Aachen International Chorbiennale by Israeli Sirenot Ensemble and his trio “Shedun Fini” was performed in U.S. Premiere at the Gesher Music Festival. That year he was also performed at the Sulzbach-Rosenberg International Music Festival and by the Copenhagen Festival Ensemble at the Odd Fellow Palæet.
In February 2014 Mr. Hochman won first prize at the composition competition of the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs with his orchestral work “A Voice in the Wilderness”, based on a poem by Israeli author Nava Semel. This work will have its U.S. premiere on April 26th and 27th this year. The same composition will also be performed under maestro Guy Feder in February 2015 in both Israel, by the Israel Chamber Orchestra, and in Germany.
More of Hochman’s coming projects for 2014 include a new composition for the renowned Latvian Youth Choir Kamēr… as part of “Riga – European Capital of Culture 2014” (premiered in March) and a new Concerto for mandolin and orchestra for London’s Orchestra of the City under conductor Chris Hopkins and soloist Alon Sariel (premiered in April). The same work was also recently chosen to be performed during the 2014-15 concert season by the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra under maestro Frédéric Chaslin. Among others, Hochman’s future projects include a new work for Summerwinds Festival (Germany), collaboration with photographer Christian Herrnbeck on a new exhibition and a new string trio for a coming portrait CD.

Broken Glass
(by the composer himself)

a comment on commercialism

This miniature for piano was composed for and dedicated to French pianist Nicolas Horvath, on the occasion of his grand project of GlassWorlds: a concert of all piano music by Philip Glass coming together with music by dozens of international composers relating to Glass’s work.
In Broken Glass I was drawn to create a critical reflection of Glass’s music and career, tightly connected to pop-culture and commercialism, and comment it in a very small piece. A first musical statement is made right at its beginning and is followed by a chain of events in three different range-areas: middle, low and high. Each event’s inner meaning and their structural arrangement all together
are to musically portray my ideas concerning this topic.
